Sugar Mountain
Sugar Mountain is a small village located at the eastern end of Avery County and surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains. With a total area of 2.4 square miles, Sugar Mountain Ski is one of the most popular ski resorts in the High Country. While one of the smaller destinations in the Blue Ridge, Sugar Mountains has plenty to offer year round. When you come to Sugar, you will experience the sweetness of the gorgeous mountain views, flowing streams, native foliage, and abundant recreation opportunities!
Real Estate in Sugar Mountain
Real estate in the High Country includes a vibrant mix of large mountain homes, single-story log cabins, farmhouses on large plots of land, and many condos. Sugar Mountain has a large number of second homes due to the area’s seasonal attractions, with many ASU alumni returning to purchase vacation homes in the mountains.
Many large winter ski cottages and summer mountain homes can be found in Sugar Mountain as well as a number of properties tucked away on their own acreages, down many backroads, on mountaintops, or in small community subdivisions. Because of this, it is important to hire a Realtor that knows the area and can point you in the right direction.
Lifestyle and Attractions
Sugar Mountain is a perfect family destination. Mine your own North Carolina gemstones at Sugar Creek Mining Company, visit a mountaintop alpaca farm, find a tee time at Sugar Mountain Golf Club, or hit the slopes for every snow adventure you could imagine! Sugar Mountain offers ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowshoeing. If you’re hungry, head to one of the many country kitchens, smokehouses, grilles, espresso bars, and taverns.
Nearby Schools and Higher Education
Sugar Mountain is a part of the Avery County School System that is made up of nine different elementary, middle, and high schools. Their mission is to prepare students for success by providing the best education possible through supportive relationships with students, parents, and community.
Lees-McRae is a private four-year college affiliated with the Presbyterian church and is located in the downtown area of Sugar Mountain’s neighbor: Banner Elk. It has the highest elevation of any campus east of the Rockies and offers a variety of educational tracks and opportunities.
History
Sugar Mountain Company began with the purchase of 2000 acres of land by Retired General Alexander Andrews and Albert Johnson. They combined their acreage with 900 acres owned by George McRae, a tract owned by Julian Morton, and two Norwood Hollow farms to form what is now Sugar Mountain. Construction of the resort began in early 1969 and the ski slopes officially opened for the first time on December 19, 1969.
